Monica Whyte - Councillor for Hornsey Ward

Haringey

MH

I have lived in Haringey for over eight years and last year was elected as a councillor to represent Hornsey ward.

Throughout the 2006 local election campaign I was the ward organiser for Hornsey, securing a massive swing against Labour to elect three Lib Dem councillors. In those elections and the general election when we elected a Lib Dem MP, I was a key member of the team across Haringey, campaigning in target wards across the borough and helping manage the election HQ.

Before the 1998 local elections, there were no Lib Dem councillors here in Haringey. In that election we got 3 councillors and now we have 26, the largest opposition group in Haringey for decades. We have also successfully elected a local Lib Dem MP. It has taken a lot of commitment and hard work - and will take even more to retain that parliamentary seat and take control of the council.

On the council I am the Lib Dem Chief Whip and have quickly built a reputation for getting things done for local residents - not just talking about it. In some respects it has been easy, as Haringey Labour set such a bad example it is not difficult to see how we Lib Dems could do things better.

Hornsey Depot

From botched CPZ consultations and pay & display machines no one wanted in Crouch End and Muswell Hill to years of inaction on key issues like Hornsey depot and Hornsey Central Hospital, our council fails to represent local residents properly.

I have a proven track record as a local campaigner, councillor and party activist here in Haringey. We know that the Tories are extinct in Haringey and cannot win this GLA seat, so we need a strong challenge to the sitting Labour GLA Member. I will make the GLA Lib Dems work harder for North London and that means raising our profile and campaigning for every vote.
